Indian Navy and IOCL Partner for Green Hydrogen Bus Trials

A significant milestone in India’s sustainable development journey has been achieved through a collaborative effort between the Indian Navy and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). In alignment with the Government of India’s green initiative and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, IOCL has handed over a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus to the Indian Navy for trials and performance testing. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Today, the IOCL ceremoniously handed over the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus to the Indian Navy as part of their joint commitment to reducing carbon footprint and enhancing air quality. This initiative underscores India’s resolve to achieve national environmental goals through innovative, eco-friendly solutions

The MoU was signed by VAdm Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics, Indian Navy and Dr Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director, IOCL in the presence of Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, and Mr Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman, IOCL. Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between IOCL and the Indian Navy, IOCL will provide the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus for operational trials.

The deployment of the hydrogen-powered bus by the Indian Navy marks a pioneering step towards integrating sustainable transportation within the Armed Forces. This initiative aims to harness hydrogen’s potential as a clean fuel, setting the stage for wider adoption across various public transit applications.

The operational phase led by the Indian Navy will facilitate a comprehensive study of the Fuel Cell Bus’s performance, durability, and operational reliability. This move signifies India’s proactive stance in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and advancing energy security through cutting-edge technologies.
