Navy Launches ‘Northeast Odyssey’ Motorcycle Expedition

In a significant move to enhance its presence in the Northeastern states, the Indian Navy launched the ‘Northeast Odyssey’ motorcycle expedition on October 18 from Shillong. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, presided over the flag-off ceremony, which also saw the attendance of Lieutenant General Sanjay Malik, General Officer Commanding of the 101 Area, and Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, Senior Air Staff Officer of the Eastern Air Command.

This expedition, conducted in collaboration with TVS Motor Company, aims to raise awareness about the Indian Navy in the Northeastern states of Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. It seeks to engage with local youth and civil society, following the success of similar initiatives in the region in 2022 and in Leh/Ladakh in 2023.

The 15-day journey will cover approximately 2,500 kilometres, visiting key cities across the three states. Key objectives include promoting career opportunities in the Navy, particularly through the Agnipath Scheme, and conducting awareness drives at schools and colleges. The initiative also emphasizes women’s empowerment, featuring Women Officers and spouses, and aims to facilitate interactions with Naval veterans and Veer Naris in the region.

In his address, Vice Admiral Pendharkar highlighted the importance of adventure activities within the Navy, stating that such endeavours not only inspire personnel to reach new heights but also foster team building and camaraderie—essential elements for effective performance at sea. He expressed his appreciation for the riders undertaking this expedition, emphasizing its significance in enhancing maritime awareness in a region that, while distant from the coast, remains integral to the nation’s identity.

He concluded by wishing all participants a safe and memorable journey and extending gratitude to TVS Motors for their partnership in this important initiative.
