Lockheed Martin has finalized its acquisition of Terran Orbital, a prominent manufacturer of modular spacecraft for the global aerospace and defence sectors, along with its subsidiary, Tyvak International. This acquisition follows a collaborative relationship between the two companies on projects, including initiatives with the Space Development Agency and Lockheed Martin’s technology demonstrations.
“The addition of Terran Orbital’s spirit of entrepreneurship to the scale of Lockheed Martin means there is a great deal of opportunity to keep pushing the boundaries of technology and space solutions together,” said Robert Lightfoot, President of Lockheed Martin Space. “We welcome their ingenuity and dedication to ensuring mission success, and we’ve always valued those aspects of our working relationship. Together, we can deliver our combined innovation and services with a greater sense of urgency to support our customers’ commercial, civil, and national security needs.”
Terran Orbital brings a distinctive range of customizable spacecraft platforms featuring interchangeable components and mission services. When integrated with Lockheed Martin’s mission system expertise and payload capabilities, this combination enhances space operations. The acquisition also supports improved manufacturing practices, driven by automation and robotics, to increase capacity and speed, as well as advanced testing techniques.
Under Lockheed Martin’s Space business area, the company will operate as Terran Orbital, a Lockheed Martin Company. It will continue to serve as a merchant supplier, providing comprehensive solutions that integrate satellite design, production, launch planning, mission operations, and in-orbit support to meet the needs of demanding military, civil, and commercial missions.
Terran Orbital, now part of Lockheed Martin, has facilities located in Boca Raton and Melbourne, Florida; Irvine and Santa Maria, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Tysons Corner, Virginia; and Torino, Italy.
