The Sri Lanka–India Naval Exercise (SLINEX) 2024, a cornerstone of maritime cooperation between the two nations, will take place from December 17 to 20, 2024, at Visakhapatnam under the auspices of the Eastern Naval Command. The exercise, now in its 19th year, underscores the growing partnership and operational synergy between the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy.
Phased Operations to Enhance Cooperation
SLINEX 2024 will be conducted in two distinct phases:
- Harbour Phase (December 17–18): This phase will focus on professional and social exchanges to strengthen mutual understanding. Activities include interactive sessions, cross-deck visits, and preparatory briefings to set the stage for seamless coordination at sea. The inaugural ceremony on December 17 will mark the formal commencement of the exercise.
- Sea Phase (December 19–20): This phase will involve a range of joint operations, including Special Forces drills, gun firings, seamanship practices, communication exercises, navigation evolutions, and helicopter operations.
Participating Units
- Indian Navy: The Eastern Fleet’s INS Sumitra, a Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel, will represent India, along with an embarked Special Forces team.
- Sri Lanka Navy: The SLNS Sayura, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, will participate, also hosting a Special Forces team.
Expanding Scope of SLINEX
First held in 2005, SLINEX has evolved into a comprehensive platform for enhancing maritime security and operational collaboration. Over the years, the exercise has expanded in scope, incorporating advanced maneuvers and tactical operations to improve interoperability, information exchange, and strategic alignment between the two navies.
The 2024 edition of SLINEX is poised to further reinforce bilateral defence ties while fostering a shared commitment to regional maritime security and stability.
As both nations prepare to embark on this exercise, SLINEX 2024 promises to be another milestone in the enduring partnership between India and Sri Lanka, exemplifying mutual trust and cooperation in safeguarding the Indian Ocean region.
