Ka-226T and Ansat to Use New VK-650V Engine

Russian Minister of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, has announced that the Ka-226T and Ansat light helicopters are slated for certification with the new Russian VK-650V engine this year. This development comes as Russia aims to bolster its aviation capabilities and offer the Ka-226T to India with the domestically produced engine.

“Now we have received a certificate for the VK-650V. A lot of work has been done, the engine has been created practically from scratch, it will be installed on the Ansat, on the Ka-226T. We are planning to start certification flights in the near future. This will allow us to do this by the end of the year,” Alikhanov stated in an interview with Russia-24 TV.

This announcement follows Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheev’s revelation at Aero India 2025 that an updated technical proposal for the Ka-226T, now featuring the VK-650V engine, has been submitted to India.

The VK-650V engine, developed by Rostec’s United Engine Corporation (UEC), received its type certificate in Russia in 2024, paving the way for serial production. At Aero India 2025, it made its international debut, showcasing its readiness for integration into light helicopters like the Ka-226T, Ansat, and Mi-34.

UEC highlights that the VK-650V, built with modern technologies and advanced materials, boasts a takeoff power of 650 hp, with an emergency power boost to 750 hp. Its modular design, autonomous oil system, extended engine life, and FADEC-type digital automatic control system are among its key advantages. The engine’s design also allows for modifications for various aircraft, including its use in hybrid power plants.

The Ka-226T, known for its twin coaxial rotors, offers enhanced flight safety in mountainous and maritime environments. India, with its experience in operating coaxial helicopters in its Navy, stands to benefit from this feature. The helicopter’s modularity allows for quick reconfiguration with transport cabins or specialized equipment modules, making it a versatile asset. India’s need for light utility helicopters is critical for operations in high-altitude regions and for rapid response missions, making the Ka-226T a potentially vital asset for India.

The successful certification of the VK-650V and its integration into the Ka-226T represent a significant step forward in Russian aviation technology and strengthen the strategic partnership between Russia and India in the defense sector.
