EDGE Completes Key Development Milestones of MIRSAD-X Electro-Optic System

EDGEone of the world’s leading advanced technology and defence groups, completed key development milestones for the MIRSAD-X electro-optic system during a field test, proving the system’s critical functionalities and advanced capabilities.

Held at EDGE’s multi-domain training, testing, and evaluation island, XRANGE, the field test successfully verified the MIRSAD-X’s detection, recognition, and identification ranges for various targets under different conditions, as well as proved its sensor command-and-control function, tracking capability, target localisation capability, and human-machine interface functionalities. The test also validated the MIRSAD-X’s reliability in the UAE’s hot and humid summer weather.

Felix Matis, Director of the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence within EDGE’s Technology & Innovation Cluster, said, “The MIRSAD-X performed well and consistently provided a clear, stabilised image under harsh weather conditions in the field, which included high temperatures, wind gusts, dust, and air turbulence. One of our main objectives was to test and prove the manual and automatic tracking capability of the MIRSAD-X in multiple scenarios. The system demonstrated high performance overall in that regard and we will now look to continue and improve the performance of the system and maximise its capabilities for various use cases.”

Slim Sayadi, Senior Technical Manager at the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence, said, “Going forward, the next steps for the MIRSAD-X are to test the performance of its laser designator as an additional capability and conduct an ‘on-the-move’ test once integrated onto a land platform.”

The MIRSAD-X is a gyro-stabilised multi-spectral electro-optics imager under development by EDGE’s Technology & Innovation (T&I) Cluster. Equipped with cutting-edge image processing, the system enables real-time detection, tracking, localisation, and targeting of objects of interest. Ideal for supporting laser-guided munitions and general maritime and border surveillance, the MIRSAD-X system seamlessly integrates onto multiple ground and naval platform types.

EDGE’s T&I Cluster is simultaneously developing a naval variant of the MIRSAD-X, which is planned to be integrated for testing on EDGE’s naval vessels.
