Thailand Announces Major Military Reshuffle to Enhance Defence Capabilities

Thailand has unveiled its annual military reshuffle, which impacts the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence. This significant change involves the promotion and appointment of 808 senior officers, underscoring the nation’s commitment to modernizing its defence capabilities.

Key promotions highlight the strategic focus on technological and operational advancements within the Army, Navy, and Air Force. General Pana Claewplodtook has been appointed as the new Chief of Army, while Admiral Jirapol Wongwit takes on the role of Chief of Navy.

In the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence, notable appointments include General Adinan Chaiyarerk, General Tharapong Malakam, and Air Chief Marshal Surarit Kitchathorn, all serving as Deputy Permanent Secretaries.

At the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, General Thitichai Thienthong, Admiral Suvin Jangyodsuk, General Ukrit Boontanon, and Air Chief Marshal Nonsee Intarasalee will serve as Deputy Chiefs of Defence Forces. General Manas Jandee has been named Chief of Staff.

Within the Royal Thai Army, alongside General Claewplodtook, key appointments include General Nattawut Nakanakorn as Deputy Chief of Army, General Ekarat Changkaew as Chairman of the Advisory Board, and General Wasu Jiamsuk as Assistant Chief of Army.

The Royal Thai Navy will see Admiral Wongwit at the helm, with Admiral Chonlathit Nawanukhro as Deputy Chief of Navy and Vice Admiral Pairote Fuangchan as Chief of Staff.

In the Royal Thai Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Chainat Phonkit has been named Deputy Chief, with Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon as Chairman of the RTAF Advisory Board.

These new appointments will take effect on October 1, 2024. This reshuffle occurs as Thailand prepares for the upcoming Defense & Security 2025 exhibition, scheduled for November 10-13, 2025. The event will serve as a critical networking opportunity, bringing together global defense manufacturers, decision-makers, and the newly appointed senior officers.
