Indian Navy to Receive Six 25T BP Tugs Under ‘Make in India’

A contract for the construction and delivery of six 25T BP Tugs has been finalized with M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) as part of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. These tugs, being built in alignment with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), will be progressively delivered for operations by the Indian Navy. The tugs will operate at the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Eastern Naval Command.

Cmde Ceasar Basu, Group Commander of NCC Kolkata, presided over the ceremony on November 17, 2024, marking the launch of the fourth tug, Yuvan, and the keel laying of the fifth and sixth tugs, Ojas and Sabal, at Titagarh Rail Systems Limited in Kolkata. These tugs are scheduled for delivery to the Indian Navy in 2025.

These 25T BP Tugs are designed to support naval ships and submarines during berthing, un-berthing, turning, and maneuvering in confined waters, thereby directly assisting the operations of Indian Navy platforms. Additionally, the tugs will enhance naval capabilities by providing crucial firefighting support afloat.
